How a tool we built to run our own business became a mission to help every African enterprise grow.
Every great platform begins with a problem. Not a theoretical problem discussed in boardrooms. Not a trend imported from another continent. A real problem, experienced firsthand.
At the time, Afrigenius was growing steadily. New projects were being delivered, clients were increasing, invoices were multiplying — and operational complexity was beginning to outgrow spreadsheets, notebooks and disconnected tools.
Like many African entrepreneurs, I searched for solutions already on the market. There were plenty. Some were powerful. Some were sophisticated. Some were globally recognised. Yet none truly understood the realities of the businesses we were building.
Most assumed unlimited budgets. Most assumed dedicated administrative teams. Most assumed stable processes and mature corporate structures. Most were designed for environments very different from the daily realities faced by African entrepreneurs and growing businesses.
So instead of adapting our business to fit the software, we built our own.
What started as a simple internal project became the first version of Gestion — a practical platform to track client projects, manage work delivery, monitor finances and issue invoices, all from a single place. There was no grand vision at the time. Only a determination to solve a problem properly.
As Afrigenius grew, managing projects was no longer enough. People had become the most valuable asset in the business — recruitment, leave, performance, skills, employee records. So we built the Human Capital Management module, expanding Gestion from project and financial administration into a more complete business operating environment.
As the platform matured, something interesting happened. Businesses that worked with Afrigenius began asking about the system. They recognised their own challenges in the problems Gestion was solving.
The more conversations we had, the more we realised something profound: across Africa, millions of businesses face the same struggle. Many cannot afford enterprise software. Many have no specialised IT department. Many need tools simple enough to use immediately, yet powerful enough to support growth. And most of all, they want solutions built by people who understand their reality.
Africa did not need another software product. It needed a platform that spoke its language.
A platform designed around African constraints and African opportunities. One that understands budgets are often limited, that businesses grow incrementally, that connectivity can be inconsistent — and that relationships, culture and trust matter. One that understands entrepreneurship in Africa often means being the CEO, salesperson, accountant, project manager and HR officer all at once.
The market was not looking for complexity. It was looking for relevance.
That was the turning point. Gestion stopped being an internal Afrigenius tool and became a mission: to build the operating system for African business. Every module added since has been guided by a single question —
“How would an African entrepreneur use this?”
Not how a Fortune 500 company would use it. Not how a multinational would deploy it. How a business owner in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos, Kigali, Accra, Lusaka, Douala or Cape Town would use it.
What began in Cape Town as a personal productivity tool has become something far greater: Gestion is the Business Operating System for Africa — built from lived experience, refined through real business challenges, and shaped by African realities. Today we are opening it up to everyone, starting here at home in South Africa.
